There will be no speakers at this group, just fellowship and empathy as
before.

This is the original group for parents with children that have
Asperger's/High Functioning Autism.

We've missed the camaraderie and copious amounts of coffee while gaining
wisdom from our been there/done that parents of older Aspies.

There's coffee, tea, snacks, a very uncomfortable couch:) and good
company.

1. Classroom Management and Effective Teaching of Children with Emotional and Behavioral Problems
WHEN: Feb. 21 in La Crosse at the Radisson Hotel, 200 Harborview Plaza, Feb. 22 in Green Bay at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1015 Lombardi Ave, Feb. 23 in Milwaukee (Pewaukee), Country Springs Hotel, 2810 Golf Road. All locations are from 8:00am – 2:30pm.
WHAT: Many children have emotional or behavioral problems that present special challenges for teachers and others in school. This workshop will provide you with strategies to enhance learning, build self-esteem and control disruptive and otherwise troublesome behavior of students with emotional and behavioral problems. Discussion topics will include conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, depression and bipolar disorder, bullying, societal violence, parental mismanagement, among others, and on this foundation, build practical strategies to maintain behavioral control and teach effectively.
WHO: This is a conference for teachers, administrators, social workers, counselors, and psychologists focused on evidence-based classroom strategies that really make a difference.

2. A Better Way Clubhouse Open-House
WHEN: Feb. 22 starting at 11:00am
WHERE: A Better Way Clubhouse at 205 S. Cherry Ave, Marshfield, WI
WHAT: Snacks will be provided. A Better Way Clubhouse was established to provide a safe and friendly environment for adults with mental illness. Its purpose is to assist individuals with their recovery by offering support, activities, and independent living skills. It is hoped this will be a valuable community resource for individuals with mental illness as well as for family members and those who provide services for them. 3. Call for Youth in Partnership with Parents for Empowerment (YiPPE) Training Proposals for 2012-2013.
WSPEI (Wisconsin Statewide Parent Educator Initiative) is seeking proposals from school districts, communities, parent groups or agencies that would like to host a Youth in Partnership with Parents for Empowerment (YiPPE) training for 2012-2013. Youth in Partnership with Parents for Empowerment (YiPPE) is the only known program in the country to simultaneously train youth with disabilities, ages 15-20, in transition along with their parents. Up to 25 youth and their parents attend 5 weekend sessions throughout a school year to learn about effective self-advocacy, communication strategies, futures planning and available resources for students in transition.

4. Call for Parents in Partnership (PIP) Training Proposals 2012-2013
WSPEI (Wisconsin Statewide Parent Education Initiative) is seeking proposals from school districts, communities, parent groups or agencies that would like to host a Parents in Partnership (PIP) training for 2012-2013.

The Parent Leadership Hub supports parents/family members, educators and other community partners to build capacity regarding meaningful family involvement. The Hub serves three primary purposes:
(1) To support parents of children with disabilities between birth and 26 years of age to participate as partners in the professional development activities of each of the other Statewide Initiatives as they design, deliver and support professional development experiences
(2) To facilitate opportunities for parents/family members to build leadership skills
(3) To provide Content Focused technical assistance concerning family involvement

Upcoming Events - January to February 2012

Parent scholarships are still available to attend the 9th Annual
Wisconsin Transition Conference on February 9-10, 2012 at the Kalahari
in Wisconsin Dells. To be eligible for the scholarship you must be the
parent/guardian of a youth with a current IEP between the ages of 14-21.

The scholarship award is for registration fees Thursday, February 9th
and Friday, February 10th, 2012. Included in the registration fees are
materials and meals provided during the conference. All other expenses
including transportation, lodging, and any other meals will be the
responsibility of the scholarship recipient.

4. *NEW* Transition Academy on Mental Health

WHEN: Wed. Oct. 19, from 9:00 – 4:00 PM (check-in 8:30 AM)

WHERE: The Kalahari Resort and Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells.

The Department of Public Instruction through the Wisconsin Statewide Transition Initiative (WSTI) and the Department of Health Services through their Healthy Transitions Initiative are pleased to announce their co-sponsorship of this new academy. Keynote presenter is Dr. Richard Van Acker on Preventing Challenging Behaviors, Proactive Strategies. This will be followed by three sectional blocks on various topics related to mental health. Target audience includes: special education teachers, administrators, transition coordinators, school psychologists, and mental health professionals.
